Rob du Mont grew up in Gulf Shores and graduated from Bayside Academy in Daphne, Alabama. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and was selected for the Navy’s Surface Warfare and Nuclear Power Programs. During his 22 years of active duty in the Navy, he completed two frigate, one destroyer, and three aircraft carrier tours. When he was not at sea, he earned a Master’s degree in Management specializing in Manpower Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He graduated with distinction and earned the award for that year’s top management graduate. He later earned a Master’s degree in National Security from the Naval War College. While serving as the Executive Officer of Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, South Carolina, he oversaw the training of over 3000 nuclear operators for service on nuclear powered submarines and aircraft carriers.

Since retiring from the Navy in 2011, Rob has worked at Austal as a Senior Program Coordinator for Post Delivery Support and earned his Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute.  In the last three years, he has coordinated training development for Austal’s Littoral Combat Ship, the successful dry dock overhauls of USS Independence (LCS-2) and the Navy’s Sea Fighter research vessel, post-delivery work for Austal’s Joint High Speed Vessel, as well as over a dozen engineering design projects.

Today, he will be discussing some of the concepts he learned while writing his Master’s thesis on employee retention titled “Junior Surface Warfare Officer Retention” and how they might be applied in the private sector.
